Château de Pompadour

The history of this Loire-style château is intertwined with that of Madame de Pompadour, Louis XV's favorite mistress, to whom he presented it as a gift in 1745. Extensively rebuilt in the 19th century, the château is open to visitors, but the real highlights are the prestigious stables, one of France's national horse studs.

There are assorted equine events; check the website for info. Combination tickets with visits to the Domaine de Chignac, the foaling nursery 2km north, are available.
