Arcos da Lapa

A much-photographed symbol of Lapa, the arches date back to the mid-18th century, when the structure was built by indigenous slaves and served as an aqueduct to carry water from the Carioca River to downtown Rio. In a style reminiscent of ancient Rome, the 42 arches stand 64m high. Look up, and you might see a yellow Bonde cable car on its way from Centro to Santa Teresa. Look straight, and the space around the Lapa Steps is filled with food and drink stands that attract crowds of partiers into the night, especially during Carnaval. Be extra careful with your phone when walking around here.
