Overview
Your road trip resumes today, as you’ll check out of your treehouse and make your way deeper into the throng of New Hampshire’s Upper Valley. Begin your day at Patch Orchards, a local farm that specializes in fresh produce, maple products, and in-season delights. While visiting, you may pick up any snacks for the duration of your road trip, or settle in for a tasting of hard cider. After this satiating stop, you’ll head to Hanover, just outside of Lebanon. Home to Dartmouth College, this curated and communal college town oozes with activities, so, after checking in to your hotel, head to the Hood Museum of Art, just next door. Free and open to the public, this museum finished years of renovations in 2019, resulting in the sleek, state-of-the-art appearance you’ll find today. Set off through the Hood's remarkable collections, which display everything from ancient Assyrian stone reliefs and Native American artworks to European masterpieces and contemporary works. The gallery also connects visitors to the work of Mexican artist José Clemente Orozco, whose sweeping mural cycle The Epic of American Civilization can be viewed across the street in Baker-Berry Library. The day’s final scheduled activity will prolong this theme of the arts as you'll catch a night of live music at the Lebanon Opera House. As you watch performers take to the stage, you'll end your night with a newfound appreciation for New Hampshire's cultural prowess.
Highlights
Patch Orchards
Nestled on a scenic hillside in Lebanon, Patch Orchards displays the simple joys of New England farm life. Come late August through mid-October, the orchard excels with pick-your-own apples and pumpkins — among the region’s most beloved fall products. Yet, no matter the season, it's a charming and deliciously rewarding stop you’ll get to experience at leisure today.
The Hood Museum of Art
One of the finest college art museums in the country, the Hood Museum of Art nurtures a robust collection of artworks that span continents and centuries. During today’s self-guided visit, don't miss the awe-inspiring Assyrian reliefs, widely considered the crown jewel of the collection. Afterward, you can pick up a snack in the attached Courtyard Cafe, part of Dartmouth's Hopkins Center of the Arts.
Lebanon Opera House Performance
The restored 800-seat Lebanon Opera House has formed the Upper Valley’s cultural heart since 1924 — an accolade you’ll experience with tonight’s performance. The venue’s intimate setting means there truly isn't a bad seat in the house, as excellent acoustics bring every show to life. From local singer-songwriters to nationally touring acts, the Opera House draws a wonderfully diverse lineup of talent, eager to share their gifts at any time of the year.
Accommodations
Hanover Inn (or similar)
This boutique inn overlooks the campus green of Dartmouth College, offering easy access to the historic institution and its many libraries and legacies. From your luxury room, you're mere steps away from the shops and restaurants of Hanover's main street, which range from a beloved Thai eatery to Molly's, a favorite among students. The hotel's lobby, meanwhile, serves free and fresh daily coffee, while Pine, the on-site restaurant, excels in New American fare. You can't beat a classic but elevated burger from the restaurant's window seat, beyond which students toss frisbees across the green.
