For an immersion in traditional Connemara culture, the award-winning, family-run Connemara Heritage & History Centre (connemaraheritage.net; adult/child €9/4.50), 6km from Clifden, is open from April to November. The restored pre-Famine cottage of Dan O’Hara is the main draw and illustrates the life of a typical 19th-century Connemara tenant farmer. There’s a multilingual audiovisual history presentation that tells O’Hara’s life story, from his eviction from the farm to his emigration to New York. The center also shows the history of Connemara from the prehistoric to the present.
