Established in 1871, Frankfurt's botanical PalmenGarten (palm garden; palmengarten.de; adult/child €9/free) is filled with tropical hothouses, rose gardens, a bamboo grove and rock garden. It covers some 50 acres, including meadows, ponds, creatively designed gardens and special exhibitions, and has about 13,000 plant species. The Flower & Butterfly House, built to celebrate the garden's 150th anniversary year in 2021, allows visitors to experience the life cycle of a butterfly from egg to caterpillar to pupa to fully matured butterfly.
There are playgrounds for kids, a pond with row boats (May to September) and a mini-gauge train. Open-air concerts take place here in summer. A second entrance is located on Palmengartenstrasse.
