While ‘quality English wine’ might sound like an oxymoron, a handful of English producers are making just that. Three Choirs is England's third biggest winery, producing 250,000 bottles annually from 20 varieties of grape such as pinot noir, bacchus and siegerrebe. Call in for a one-hour guided winery tour with a tasting session (2.30pm Wednesday to Sunday).

The pricey attached restaurant (mains £16.50 to £24.50) serves classic brasserie dishes and there are comfy, contemporary rooms on-site (double from £140).
