Şamaxı Grand Mosque

Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan's 'oldest' and most splendid mosque has been a place of Islamic worship since 743 AD, and although though the current version dates mostly from a 2009–13 rebuild, it incorporates powerful stone columns that are a century older. The interior's turquoise-mosaic mihrab is especially impressive.

Shoes should be removed, bags left with the guard and women must cover their hair (scarves available).
