The world is reeling under unchecked and unabated pollution from harmful chemicals. The pollutants are multiple and varied, modern day home cleaners form a major source of hazardous chemical pollutants in the earth. The rampant use of these cleaning agents leads to air and water pollution apart from causing health problems like allergies, breathing issues, skin irritation amongst others. A simple solution for this problem lies in our kitchen waste.
Ecofriendly cleaners, or bio enzymes, can be easily made at home with the daily kitchen waste and work as perfect antidote to polluting cleaners. Bio enzymes are essentially organic solutions made by fermentation of fruit and vegetable peels, jaggery and water. They are are simple, inexpensive and completely natural substitutes for toxic cleaning agents. They can be used as bathroom cleaners, detergents, floor cleaners, car washing liquid, even phenyls and disinfectants. The best natural home cleaning solutions are made from the peels of citrus fruits. A concoction of orange and lemon skin, water and jaggery or brown sugar turns into a miraculous solution in 3-4 months. This can replace all home cleaning agents available in the market. These non-toxic and eco-friendly cleansing solutions can be used for multiple purposes after diluting with water in different ratios.
No other cleaner is as versatile and inexpensive as a Bio enzymes. Bio enzymes have an amazing capacity to rejuvenate contaminated water (one litre of bio enzyme can de-contaminate 1000 litres of water). The citrus fruit cleaner de-clogs drains, and also act as a powerful soil conditioner when used twice a month for watering plants.
To make 1 litre of Bioenzyme cleaning liquid:
Things Required
1. Orange or Lemon peels (or mixed) 3 parts (300 gms)
2. Jaggery / brown Sugar- 1 part (100 gms)
3. Water- 10 parts (1 litre)
4. Baker's yeast - 1/10th part (10 gms; optional)
5. Old transparent bottles
Note: The ingredients can be modified in the same proportion for any quantity
Method:
1. Mix all the ingredients together in the plastic transparent bottle.
2. Leave 20% of space in the bottle for the gas, which is released during the fermentation process.
3. Store it in shade for 2-3 months.
4. Unscrew the cap of the bottle every alternate day to release the gas.
5. When ready, strain the liquid with a strainer and store it in a clean and dry plastic bottle.
Note: Bio enzymes should never be made using glass bottles as gases get released during the entire process and glass bottles could explode (if unchecked). These cleansing solutions can be used for multiple purposes after diluting with water in the given ratio:
Multi-purpose cleaner (1 part of Bio enzyme: 10 parts of water),
Vegetable cleaner(1: 20),
Mopping (1/4 cup of citrus fruit cleaner in 1 bucket of 5 litres of water),
Car wash (1 cup: 20 litres of water).
Pesticide and herbicide (spray 10 ml in 1 litre of water).
