A few hours from Caracas, Maracay is a busy metropolis and the 300-year-old capital of Aragua state. From 1899 to 1935 it was home base for infamous caudillo (provincial strongman) Juan Vicente Gómez, who built up its infrastructure and shaped it into the nation’s aviation and air force hub. The center of an important agricultural and industrial area, it’s usually visited as a stopover on the way to Parque Nacional Henri Pittier and doesn’t have many attractions to otherwise hold the traveler.
