Welcome to Maracaibo
A metropolis with vast suburbs, Maracaibo encompasses the dilapidated historic center to the south and a characterless new center of high-rises to the north. Getting between the two is easy and fast, so it doesn’t really matter much where you stay. The new center offers more upscale hotels, restaurants and bars, and is safer at night, though most lodging options are pricey and unexciting. The historic center boasts more colonial sights, but the area is unsafe and ghost town–deserted at night except in the Calle 94 nightlife district.
