Welcome to Hat Chaweng
Bristling with selfie sticks and an assault course of low-hanging street signs, Chaweng Beach Road is crowded with noisy souvenir shop owners, tattoo parlours, rip-off pharmacies every two metres and a sky punctuated with the roar of overflying jets. Come late afternoon, the moo·ay tai (Thai boxing) advertising vans begin slewing down the road, volume knobs twisted to max. If you expected a romantic vision of Ko Samui, this is the ninth circle of hell; but the dining options are superb, the bar and cabaret scene is simply hopping and the beach isn't bad, especially at sunrise, and it's fun if you want action. Come evening, when the main road is thumping – hit the sand or go for a wander by Chaweng Lake.
