Driving along the I-10, about 20 miles west of Palm Springs, you may do a double take when glimpsing "Dinny the Dinosaur" and "Mr Rex" on the north side of the freeway. Starting in the 1960s, theme park sculptor Claude K Bell spent more than two decades crafting these concrete behemoths to draw customers to his adjacent restaurant. Even more bizarre, the beasts are now owned by creationists who promote their anti-evolution world view in a museum. You can also pan for dino fossils, climb inside Rex's mouth and stock up on dino souvenirs in the gift shop.
