Since 1963, the 2.5-mile ride aboard the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway's rotating gondolas has been the coolest trip in town. Enjoy uplifting views as you're whisked through five vegetation zones – dusty Sonoran desert floor to pine-scented Mt San Jacinto State Park – in just 10 minutes. It's about 30°F to 40°F (up to 22°C) cooler at the mountain station (8561ft), so don't go up in flip-flops and tank top, especially if you plan on hitting a trail.
There are exhibits, food, viewing platforms and gift shops at both ends. Good-value Ride 'n' Dinner deals are available after 4pm.
The valley station is 3.5 miles off Hwy 111; the turnoff is about 3 miles north of downtown Palm Springs. Cable cars depart at least every 30 minutes. Online tickets are available from six weeks to 24 hours in advance and are highly recommended to avoid often horrendous wait times. A contingent of on-site tickets is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
