When you’re strolling down Indian Canyon Dr, it’s right there in the name: you stand on Indigenous land. A wonderful way to learn about the history and culture of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians is at the Agua Caliente Cultural Museum (accmuseum.org; adult/senior $10/5) on North Indian Canyon Dr.
Opened in 2023 after years of anticipation, the museum features a short film illustrating the tribe’s origin story. Historical photographs, interactive displays and audio components bring to life the Indigenous experience of colonialism and its effect on the culture, but also spotlight living traditions, cultural contributions and natural history of the area.
