Just northwest of the Jordaan, former gasworks have been repurposed in recent years as "cultural village" Westergas (westergas.nl) with a growing collection of art museums and venues, as well as diverse places for drinking, dining, clubbing and entertainment, and a slew of festivals.
Westergas' 19th-century buildings now house creative spaces like the grand former engineer's residence, now housing the artist-designed, 2025-opened Museum Villa (museumvilla.com; adult/child from €17.50/9), with changing experiential contemporary art exhibitions.
The former purification hall, where sulfur was extracted, is home to the 2022-opened immersive digital art gallery Fabrique des Lumières (fabrique-lumieres.com; adult/child €18/14). Also in the purification hall is the 2025 arrival Amsterdam in Motion (amsterdaminmotion.nl; adult/child €18/free). Curated by the under-renovation Amsterdam Museum, it incorporates a 15-minute journey through the city's past via projection mapping on a 200-sq-meter city model of 30,500 buildings at 1:1300 scale, and upper-floor interactive installations showcasing Amsterdam's present and future.
On-site brewery Brouwerij Troost Westergas (brouwerijtroost.nl; brewery tours per person €10) has big silver tanks cooking up saison, blond ale and smoked porter varieties, distills its own jenever and gin, and makes sodas. Brewery tours last 45 minutes and take place on Saturdays.
Linked to Westergas by a long wading pool and tree-shaded paths, expansive Westerpark is a favorite local hangout on sunny days.
