An alternative surprise lying beneath the 1e Constantjin Huygensstraat bridge: the Vondelbunker. This hidden-away space behind a graffitied door is a fallout shelter dating from 1947, which became Amsterdam's first youth center in 1968 and was a hotbed of hippie creativity and activism. Today it's a volunteer-run spot for live music, film nights, poetry and more.
