Crowning the hilltop above Bundi Palace, the 14th-century Taragarh (entry on Bundi Palace ticket) is a wonderfully tumbledown fortress, but you'll need to check it's safe to visit at the Bundi Palace ticket desk, as tigers relocated to the new Ramgarh Vishdhari Wildlife Sanctuary have been tracked in the area.
Assuming you get the all clear, you can follow the steep stone pathway uphill above the Chitrasala to reach an overgrown sprawl of crumbling barracks, cracked watchtowers and ruined royal apartments, protected by imposing walls.
The views are stupendous, but bring a stick to push back the vegetation and deter testosterone-charged macaques. If the fort is off-limits, visit Kshar Bagh and the Shikar Burj hunting lodge instead.
