Rietveld-Schröderhuis

The chances are that if you walked past the residential building at Prins Hendriklaan 50, you wouldn't look twice. Yet this is the Rietveld Schröderhuis (rietveldschroderhuis.nl; adult/child €19/3), a UNESCO World Heritage site. Look again, and it becomes clearer that this 1924 construction was years ahead of its time. Entering feels like you're walking into a 3D Piet Mondrian abstract.

Things get especially interesting when the walls start to move. To make for efficient use of space, celebrated Utrecht designer Gerrit Rietveld created a system that allows the room plan to be substantially adjusted. Guides demonstrate the mechanisms in action.

Prebooking online is essential because you must join a (small) group tour. It's worth arriving at least 20 minutes before your assigned entry time to see a contextualizing video. The location is 2km out of the center, accessible using bus 8 to the Hoogstraat stop.

See more of Rietveld's trademark furniture at Utrecht's wide-ranging Centraal Museum (centraalmuseum.nl; adult/child €17.50/free).
