Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek

Based on early Carlsberg brewing magnate Carl Jacobsen’s private art collection, it's sheer joy to wander the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek (glyptoteket.com; adult/child 125kr/free), from the Greek meaning "sculpture collection" – though it contains paintings as well as sculpture – which has been open since 1897. At its center is the palm-filled, glass-domed winter garden, with pools and fountains: this was a museum intended to be lit only by natural light. There is classical sculpture from Rome, with heads put on different bodies where necessary as Carl wanted them to look complete, in a Roman-style, colonnaded atrium. There's The Kiss by French sculptor Rodin, and paintings by Gauguin. Cézanne, Van Gogh, Pissarro, Monet and Renoir, plus Egyptian mummies and Roman death mask paintings. The indoor terrace cafe, shop and an outdoor terrace are other treats in store.
