An imposing cube of masonry crowning a hilltop overlooking central Norwich, this massive 12th-century castle is one of England’s best-preserved examples of Anglo-Norman military architecture. Inside, a superb interactive museum crams in lively exhibits on Boudica and the Iceni, the Anglo-Saxons, the Vikings and the gruesome medieval punishments once carried out here. The museum closed during 2020 but is due to reopen in 2021; call ahead to check the latest opening times and prices.
The castle's art gallery houses works of the acclaimed 19th-century Norwich School of landscape painting founded by John Crome, and (drum roll) the world's largest collection of novelty teapots.
