There are a few contenders for "best visitor center in Alaska" but the Morris Thompson Cultural & Visitors Center (morristhompsoncenter.org; free), an ingenious mix of museum, info point and cultural center, has to be in the running.
Inside are exhibits on Alaskan history and Alaska Native culture, as well as daily movies and cultural performances. The beautifully designed building is packed with insightful multimedia exhibitions related to Alaska’s history and the rich traditions of the Athabascan people. You may feel as if you’re entering another realm (the mystical Interior) as you wander through recreations of a salmon smokehouse, a hunting camp (complete with curious grizzly bear), a pocket of snow and a winter cabin.
Outside, on the grounds, don't miss the moose-antler arch and historic cabin, a simple two-room abode with its wood-burning stove and eye-catching wallpaper gives a glimpse of living conditions during the early gold rush days.
The on-site Tanana Chiefs Conference Cultural Programs are designed to share Native culture with the wider world, and also ensure it survives to the next generation. There are one-hour cultural performances (1pm, 3pm and 5pm), live craft-making demonstrations (schedule varies; call ahead) and the opportunity to make your own crafts under the guidance of Native artists.
