The severe Arctic and wild interior of Alaska are blessed with rainbows of wildflowers, which are all on display here. The Georgeson Botanical Garden (uaf.edu/afes/places/gbg; suggested donation $8) is a perfect picnic spot, as well as a 5-acre kaleidoscope of flowers, herbs, fruits and gigantic vegetables.
There are also loads of wildflowers, a food garden, and the Babula Children’s Garden: kids will enjoy getting lost in the hedge maze or splashing about in the water garden and flume. Keep an eye out for butterflies, native songbirds and migratory birds.
You’ll earn serious bragging rights – and see some spectacular blooms – by visiting the Georgeson Botanical Garden. As part of the University of Alaska, the gardens are also used in research. It’s a pleasant stroll from the nearby Museum of the North.
