Trekking up Ischia's Monte Epomeo – aka the island’s dormant volcano – is one of the most iconic Ischia experiences, for visitors and locals alike. You'll encounter many fellow hikers along the well-marked, low- to medium-difficulty path, all in pursuit of spectacular 360-degree views of the island and the Gulf of Naples.
A Sleeping Giant
At 789m high, Monte Epomeo is the tallest mountain on the volcanic island of Ischia. Its last eruption was in 1302. At the moment it is believed to be in a "quiescent" phase.
An Uphill Trek
The quickest, most popular way to scale Monte Epomeo is to start from the village of Fontana. To get to the village, you can drive, or take the CD bus from Ischia Porto (30 minutes) and hop off at the Fontana stop; the start of the trail is marked by a signpost around the corner. Follow the paved road path until the trail diverts onto the volcano, where you'll meet swaths of rocky, ethereal forest.
Volcanic Pit Stops
At around the 2km mark, you'll come to Miscillo Sapori, a rustic cantina serving platters of salumi, cheese and wine for a lovely pit stop. Pressing on, you'll hit more leafy trails and get your first glimpses of the stunning views. Finally, at the top, you'll reach La Grotta da Fiore, a volcano-top tavern serving country dishes, including Ischia-style rabbit.
An Ancient Chapel in the Rock
Before heading back down to terra firma, stop at the Chiesa di San Nicola ed Eremo, a lovely 15th-century chapel just 60m from the restaurant, carved into the tufaceous rock.
