Ingeniously built into a dry dock beside Kronborg Slot, the subterranean maritime museum, M/S Museet for Søfart(Maritime Museum of Denmark; mfs.dk; adult/child 135kr/free), was designed by Denmark's starchitects Bjarke Ingels Group. It merits a visit for its innovative design, fitted into the dock, with internal, glass-lined interiors and access to outdoors as well. The multimedia exhibitions explore Denmark's maritime history and culture in dynamic, contemporary ways, as well as beautifully constructed model boats, often made by former sailors. Some of the most interesting sections look at slavery, trade and exploitation in Denmark's overseas colonies.
The museum also houses a contemporary cafe and an excellent gift shop of maritime-themed gifts.
