The 2.6-mile Greenway is a linear park that connects the Tremé to City Park via Bayou St John, traversing the length of the Tremé and Mid-City along the way. It's a bicycle- and pedestrian-friendly trail that follows the course of one of the city's oldest transportation paths. It was originally a canal and later a railroad.
From Canal to Trail
Today, the Lafitte Greenway (lafittegreenway.org) is touted by supporters as a harbinger of urban renewal. This dynamic is probably most evident in the section of the Greenway closest to Tremé, which is dotted with athletic fields, fitness stations with public exercise gear, and murals. A colorful example of the latter includes Shine Together, which can be found in the middle of the Greenway roughly where it intersects with N Roman Ave.
Continuing up the Greenway towards Mid-City, you’ll pass the Sojourner Truth Neighborhood Center at N Galvez St, a community center with gardens and events rental spaces. The presence of the center speaks to the Greenway’s community orientation, and nearby you'll find more exercise parks and tennis courts. Around here you'll also start seeing businesses cropping up, such as Flour Moon Bagels (flourmoonbagels.com), where the bagels and bialys are – mwah – chef’s kiss, and next door Skeeta Hawk Brewing (skeetahawkbrewing.com), a friendly neighborhood brewery. As you proceed into Mid-City, the trail narrows and the adjacent green space gets more tangled and wild.
