Rising to 700ft, the honey-colored Kelso Dunes are among the country’s tallest sand piles. The trailhead is about 3 miles on a gravel road (no 4WD needed) west of Kelbaker Rd, 7 miles south of the Kelso Depot Visitor Center. The hike will have you mopping your brow, especially when you reach the sands, but once you're on top, all pain is forgotten. Best after sunrise or in the afternoon.
Under the right conditions the dunes emanate low humming or booming sound caused by shifting sands. Running downhill sometimes triggers this phenomenon.
