In the near-ghost town of Amboy, Roy's Motel & Cafe has been a popular pitstop for Route 66 travelers since 1938. If you believe the lore, founder Roy Crowl once cooked his famous Route 66 double cheeseburger on the hood of a '63 Mercury. The motel and cafe are abandoned, but since 2019 Roy's iconic neon sign shines again brightly from dusk until about 10pm. A store sells beverages and snacks.
In 2005, Amboy, including Roy's, was purchased by Albert Okura, owner of the Juan Pollo restaurant chain, for $425,000 in cash.
