The Real Felipe Fortress (adult/child S12/5), built between 1747 and 1774 to guard Lima against pirates, is the biggest Spanish military architectural work of its time, covering over 9.5 hectares in a tortoise-shaped irregular pentagon.
The fortress, a site for historical reflection and a small military presence, provides sweeping vistas of San Lorenzo Island and the notorious El Frontón prison from its elevated walkways. Tours are conducted solely in Spanish, but daring visitors may take a nighttime tour on Saturdays (S50, 5:30pm) to experience the site’s tragic history and famous hauntings.
After exploring the narrow dungeons and lime-masonry walls, take a stroll through the adjacent Parque Temático de la Policía, a surreal, landscaped garden dotted with police tanks and life-size statues of officers in riot gear.
As the surrounding dock area can be rough, it is recommended to travel by taxi. Note that the museum is closed on Mondays and requires cash.
