This highly professional company offers various treks, and climbs all the local peaks. Founded in 1954 by Carlos Zárate, the great-grandfather of climbing in Arequipa, it's now run by one of his sons, experienced guide Carlos Zárate Flores. Another of Zárate's sons, Miguel, was responsible, along with archaeologists, for unearthing "Juanita the Ice Maiden" atop Nevado Ampato in 1995.
Prices depend on group size and transportation method, including S250 per person for a group of four to climb El Misti, and S220 for a 3-day trek in the Cañón del Colca, both with private transportation, guide, meals and all equipment.
Zárate’s guides generally speak Spanish or English, but French speakers are also available when prearranged. The company rents all kinds of gear to independent climbers and hikers, including ice axes, crampons and hiking boots.
