Spectacular views reward those who climb up to Cape Byron (Walgun) from the Captain Cook Lookout on the Cape Byron Walking Track (nationalparks.nsw.gov.au). Ribboning around the headland and through rainforest, the track dips and (mostly) soars its way to the 1901 Cape Byron Lighthouse perched atop the Cape. Look out for dolphins (year-round) and migrating whales (June to October). Koalas are also occasionally spotted along the trail. Allow about two hours for the entire 3.7km loop.
You're also likely to encounter bold brush turkeys and shyer wallabies.
