The spectacular waterfalls, sheer volcanic cliffs and dense rainforest of 80-sq-km Nightcap National Park (nationalparks.nsw.gov.au) are expected in NSW’s wettest area. About 45 minutes from Byron Bay or Lismore, it’s part of the World Heritage–listed Gondwana Rainforests and home to many protected creatures.

The Historic Nightcap Track (18km, one day), originally carved by postal workers, runs from Mt Nardi to Rummery Park. The Minyon Loop (7.5km, 4½ hours) circles Minyon Falls, with a wheelchair-accessible lookout just 50m from the car park. A scenic unsealed road leads to Terania Creek Picnic Area and the 1.4km Protesters Falls; swimming is not permitted.
