Welcome to Nuwakot

A strategic stopping post on the old trade route with Tibet, the early-Malla-era fort (kot) was captured by Prithvi Narayan Shah, who launched his unifying conquest of the Kathmandu Valley from here in 1768.

Nuwakot was hit badly by the 2015 earthquake, during which many village houses collapsed and the main historic temples were badly damaged. The buildings of Durbar Sq are due to be stabilised and renovated by a Chinese team, with a tentative completion date of 2021.
