Welcome to Monuriki
Tiny, uninhabited Modriki (and ironically not Castaway Island) featured in the 2001 Tom Hanks movie Cast Away, and every resort worth its cabanas and cocktails sells day trips to what is increasingly referred to as 'Tom Hanks Island' (somewhat confusingly, it's also known as Monuriki). Trips cost around $100 to $140 depending on where you start out and what kind of lunch, if any, is included. The island is beautiful – it's a Hollywood star, after all – and the wide lagoon is perfect for snorkelling. An ongoing program with local people to eradicate feral goats and rats has seen native crested iguanas and wedge-tailed shearwaters successfully reintroduced to the island, so keep your eyes open for them. BYO volleyball for 'Wilson' selfies.
The Seaspray schooner sails here as a day trip from Denarau and other island resorts.
