Lulworth Castle

A confection in creamy, dreamy white, this baronial pile looks more like a French chateau than a traditional English castle. Built in 1608 as a hunting lodge, it's survived extravagant owners, extensive remodelling and a disastrous fire in 1929. It has been extensively restored, especially the kitchen and cellars. Ask whether the tower has reopened – it offers sweeping coastal views.
