Nestled in the steep-cut Vesdre River valley 20km east of Liège, the former wool-processing city of Verviers is a little off the tourist radar but has plenty of charm. There's a superb chocolate museum, the area's best blues-rock venue, lots of riverside dining and several patchily genteel neighbourhoods with some impressive B&Bs. These make Verviers a fine base for those with their own vehicle wishing to visit the Hautes Fagnes, Limbourg, Spa, Blégny Mine and the Val-Dieu abbey complex.
