Nestled into the Vesdre River valley, 20km east of Liège, sprawling Verviers was already a cloth town in the 15th-century but became an international centre for wool processing in the early 1800s. Amid post-industrial decline the town retains some patchily genteel corners. It's perversely likeable and a base from which to venture into the Haute Fagnes.
