Welcome to Lake Kariba
Lake Kariba is the nation's Riviera where it's all about houseboats, beer, fishing and amazing sunsets. It's one of the world's largest artificial lakes, covering an area of more than 5000 sq km and holding 180 billion tonnes of water. Its location adjoining the Matusadona National Park means it's home to plenty of wildlife, including the Big Five – lions, leopards, buffaloes, elephants and rhinos. Yet it sees few overseas visitors due to perceived high costs and difficulty of public transport access. Rest assured, it's only a five-hour bus journey from Harare and there are backpacker options to match the luxury lodges. It also provides a good alternative route into Zambia, as well as Victoria Falls if you have a double-entry visa.
A good source of information covering the region is Wild Zambezi (www.wildzambezi.com), which has a comprehensive listing of houseboats, accommodation and activities in the area.
