This museum stands atop Presidio Hill, the site of California's first settlement and its first mission, known as Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcalá, founded here in 1769 before being moved 6 miles east in 1774 (sandiegohistory.org; suggested donation $10) . Inside the Spanish Revival building is an exhibition about San Diego's original European settlement, which housed soldiers and prisoners and served as a military garrison between 1769 and 1835.
