This builder’s paradise is more than just a theme park – it’s an immersive land where Legos are life-sized, dragons are real and the only limit is your imagination. The first Legoland theme park in the country, Carlsbad’s main attraction has two hotels, a separately ticketed aquarium and water park, and a full schedule of fun seasonal events.
Orientation
Just like Lego bricks themselves, the Legoland California park is small but mighty. The easily navigable campus includes the Legoland theme park, an attached Legoland water park, and a separate Sea Life Aquarium – plus two themed hotels – all within a very short walk of one another. While there's fun for everyone, this is an ideal theme park to visit when your kids are younger (12 and under). The rides are fun but not too intense, and many ride queues and waiting areas (even in the restaurants) have Lego play areas where kids can burn off extra energy during the boring parts when parents are waiting in line. Everything from the food to the hotels (with free breakfasts) to the online ticket deals are a good value at this family resort.
Legoland Park
There are over 60 rides and attractions at Legoland Park, ranging from gentle rides for young kids to thrill coasters – but even the thrill coasters are still family-friendly. In Dino Valley, the park’s newest land, you can search for dinosaurs on Explorer River Quest or escape the Coastersaurus. Search for treasure in the Lost Kingdom Adventure dark ride in the Land of Adventure, or tame the Dragon coaster on Castle Hill.
The central land at Legoland, Miniland USA, is a jaw-dropping attraction made of millions of Lego bricks. The enormous installation features scenery from Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, New York, Washington, DC, and Las Vegas. You can walk around and explore – there are even motorized functions like moving cars – or take the Coast Cruise, a boat ride across the park’s central lake, to get a water’s edge view.
In addition to rides, Legoland has interactive shows and parades, like "Once Upon a Brick – Tale of the Unicorn Knight" storytime and the Legoland Jam dance party. Meet characters from entertainment like The Lego Movie and Lego Ninjago.
Legoland’s Water Park is within the gates of the theme park, but there's an additional charge for admission (note: there’s no access without Legoland admission; it's an extra $35 if you buy discounted tickets online). Inside the water park, there are six water slides, a pirate boat flume ride, a lazy river and Orange Rush, a raft slide half-pipe.
Sea Life Aquarium
Legoland’s Sea Life Aquarium shares a central plaza with the theme park, but you can purchase a separate ticket for entry ($25; less if you have a park ticket) without having to enter Legoland itself. Inside are over 350 species of marine creatures, most of them native to Southern California, and outdoor touch tanks.
Brick or Treat
In September and October, Legoland celebrates Halloween with Brick or Treat, featuring special entertainment like a dance party with Lego Dracula and in-park trick or treating. Costumes are encouraged, and not even the zombie cheerleader Lego characters are too scary.
Accommodations
There are two Lego hotels here. The Legoland Resort Hotel has pirate- and adventure-themed rooms, and the Legoland Castle Hotel is full of wizards and dragons. Both offer separate kids’ sleeping areas in every room, a box of Legos to play with in the room, free breakfast and nightly family entertainment, like poolside movies.
