Cavernous red-brick sheds now house De Hallen (dehallen-amsterdam.nl), with sustainable Dutch design and fashion boutiques; an antiques shop; a bike seller and repairer; a hairdressing academy-salon; a library; galleries; Filmhallen (filmhallen.nl), a nine-screen cinema; and the Hotel De Hallen.
At De Hallen's heart, its skylit food hall, Foodhallen (foodhallen.nl), is an airy, open-plan communal dining area surrounded by 21 stands cooking everything from Mumbai street food to Dutch-specialty meatballs. "Beats & Bites" on Fridays and Saturdays, with DJs, and "Bands & Bites" when live musicians play on the first Thursday of the month, add to the party atmosphere. There's also a reading cafe with cultural events and an all-day bar-restaurant.
Regular events include markets, sustainability workshops and pop-up exhibitions.
Directly outside De Hallen is the street market Ten Katemarkt.
