Flights & getting there

Air

Port Elizabeth Airport is about 5km from the city centre.

South African Airways and its subsidiaries Airlink, SA Express and Mango, and FlySafair and Kulula all fly daily to/from cities including Cape Town (from R900, 1¼ hours), Durban (from R1100, 1¼ hours) and Jo’burg (from R800, 1¾ hours).

A taxi to the centre costs about R130.

Bus

Greyhound, Translux and City to City depart from the Greenacres Shopping Centre, about 4km inland from the city centre. Intercape departs from its office behind the old post office. They all have daily buses to/from Cape Town (from R450, 12 hours) via the Garden Route, Jo'burg (from R500, 16 hours) via Bloemfontein (from R480, 9½ hours) and Durban (from R520, 14½ hours) via Grahamstown (from R290, two hours) and East London (from R450, 4½ hours).

Baz Bus stops at the hostels in Port Elizabeth en route between Cape Town and Durban. Mzansi Experience also stops in PE en route between Cape Town and Hogsback (and on to Jo'Burg).

All the big car-rental operators have offices in Port Elizabeth or at the airport.

Train

Shosholoza Meyl runs to/from Jo’burg (20 hours, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday) via Cradock and Bloemfontein. A sleeper in tourist class costs from R500.
