At Samui’s northern end is Wat Phra Yai. Erected in 1972, the modern golden Buddha (sitting in the Mara posture) stands 12m above the temple grounds and is visible from much of Samui’s northeast coast. Early mornings are the best time to visit: the temple is quiet, the light is soft, and you’ll have a better chance of photographing the Buddha without tourists in the frame.
The surrounding complex includes small shrines, viewpoints and stalls selling amulets and iced drinks, and the elevated walkway provides sweeping views over the bay toward Ko Pha-Ngan. Observe the notices instructing visitors to wear correct garb for visits.
