A pleasant approach to Coyoacán’s central plazas is through the Viveros de Coyoacán, the principal nurseries for Mexico City’s parks and gardens – the park produces over a million seedlings each year. The 38.9-hectare swath of greenery, 1km west of central Coyoacán, is popular with joggers (and squirrels!) and great for a stroll with spaces dedicated to flowers and cacti. The park is home to multiple species of trees, including white cedar, ash and jacaranda.
The most notable tree is the Montezuma cypress, the national tree of Mexico made famous by the Tree of Tule in Oaxaca. From metro Viveros, walk south (right, as you face the fence) along Avenida Universidad and take the first left, Avenida Progreso.
