Just below Agia Ekaterini, the main church, look for a Venetian building that was once the administrative base of a French garrison based in Sitia during the transition from Ottoman power in the late 19th century.

You can still make out the inscription, in French, ‘8th Regiment…Salle de Rapports’ above the portal. The wooden bay window was added during the Turkish occupation.
