The airfield of Tempelhof Airport that so gloriously handled the Berlin Airlift of 1948–49 has been repurposed as one of the world’s largest urban parks.
In this steadily evolving open-sky adventure playground, cyclists and bladers zip down old runways, while fun zones include barbecue areas, community gardens and basketball courts. In spring, Skudde sheep roll in to serve as natural lawnmowers.
Northern Feld – Columbiadamm Entrance
At Stadtacker you might stumble upon a weekend party among the veggie beds, but the real treat here is Nuture Mini Art Golf, where sinking your shot means navigating wild art installations built from recycled materials. Afterwards, kick back with a cold one at the Tempelgarten beer garden.
Western Feld – Tempelhofer Damm Entrance
For big-sky views over the Feld, head up to the rooftop terrace of the THF Tower (adult/concession €6/3), the former air traffic control tower, then check out exhibits on the airport’s history. Nearby Mobilcenter Berlin rents bicycles in case you’re ready to hit the tarmac. In summer, the Luftschloss wooden amphitheater comes alive with concerts, theater and a circus, while flamenco dancers fire up the dance floor at nearby Tanzboden.
Eastern Feld – Oderstrasse Entrance
Near the entrance, some 500 hobby gardeners have carved out a green haven at the idyllic Allemende Kontor communal garden. Head south and you’ll hit Vogelfreiheit, a skatepark with ledges and ramps built from granite salvaged from the demolished Palace of the Republic. Nearby, a barrier-free mini-ramp welcomes wheelchair skaters. Brainy types meet at the rook-shaped Schachhäuschen for Sunday chess showdowns.
