Taipei has long had a lack of decent outdoor drinking options, even though the city enjoys subtropical weather. However, that is changing. One of the liveliest outdoor spaces to open in recent years is Pier 5, a waterfront strip of pop-up bars in Dadaocheng Wharf, offering great views of the Tamsui River. Some of the stalls have rooftop areas or benches and seats all around. It’s very welcoming, as you’ll see young couples, families with kids, and seniors all enjoying themselves. Famous for its sunsets, you can also watch the reflection of the lights twinkle in the glassy violet of the water after night falls. Come weekends, performances including live music and puppet theatre are often held here. Watch out for mosquitoes.
