Piaţa Unirii

Begin at 1 Piața Unirii, a showcase of eclectic architectural heritage. Gaze at the Hungarian folk motifs adorning the secession-style 2 Brück House before turning to admire the twin spiritual anchors of the square: the 3 Saint George’s Catholic Cathedral and the 4 Serbian Orthodox Cathedral. Completing the ensemble is the 5 Timișoara Art Museum, housed in a former baroque palace whose sweeping arches and symmetrical windows. In the square’s centre, note the 6 Holy Trinity Monument, commemorating the end of a plague in the 1730s. Continue along Str Palanca to the 7 Theresia Bastion, the sole surviving defensive structure of the old fortress, also built in the 1730s. From there, turn right after 8 Curtea Berarilor (p000) toward 9 Piața Libertății, framed by classicist-style buildings and home to the baroque Virgin Mary statue in front of the 10 Old Town Hall.
