Petrified Forest

Three million years ago, a volcanic eruption at Mt St Helena blew down a stand of redwoods. Their trunks gradually turned to stone, and in 1914, enterprising environmentalist Ollie Bockee preserved this land as an educational roadside attraction – and her vision remains remarkably intact today. Wildfires struck in 2017, but the petrified redwoods were spared – and the redwoods are recovering beautifully. Two half-mile trails are open to explore independently or on one-hour educational tours (11am, 1pm and 3pm Wednesday to Saturday).
