From a tiny platform by Sainsbury's supermarket on the outskirts of the town of Matlock (not Matlock Bath), nostalgic steam trains trundle along a 4-mile length of track to the nearby village of Rowsley, home to Caudwell's Mill.
Services run five times daily Saturday and Sunday (and some weekdays) from May to October, and some weekends at other times of the year – check timetables online.
From March to November, would-be engineers can take a one-hour train-driving course (£130; 9.45am) or two-hour course (£225; 8.45am); you must be aged between 18 and 70.
