Parque de la Memoria

Nestled on the shore of the river, peaceful Parque de la Memoria (free; open until 6pm) is one of BA’s best kept secrets. Lush lawns cover the park, and it is impeccably maintained, in part owing to its purpose as a memorial to those who were "disappeared" during the military dictatorship. Public art works (by Clorindo Testa, Jenny Holtzer and Dennis Oppenheim among others) jut out of the ground, framed by the stretch of water behind (and the coast of Uruguay in the distance). The somber monument in the park center has the inscribed names of the official 9000 disappeared but enough plaques for the suspected 30,000 who were kidnapped and killed. Use the park respectfully as family members visit the site to mourn, remember and leave flowers.
