Musikverein

The prestigious Musikverein opened the doors of its two main halls in 1870, of which its gilded cuboid Goldener Saal (Golden Hall) is most famous for being the permanent home of the Wiener Philharmoniker (Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra). The opulent space has the best acoustics of any concert hall in Austria, which the classical troupe embraces. The lavish interior can be visited on a 45-minute guided tour (in English; €10) at 1pm Monday to Saturday (Monday to Friday in July and August). Smaller-scale performances are held in the Brahms Saal.

Tickets for the famous New Year's Eve concert cost anything from €25 (standing room) to €800; due to high demand, a ballot takes place in January or February – register at www.wienerphilharmoniker.at. Standing-room tickets are available up to seven weeks in advance.
